Ballet Russe
company
Ballet Russe (formerly known as Swansea's Pavlov Ballet), began life in Bristol in 1998 and has been based in Swansea's prestigious Grand Theatre since September 1999. In 199 the company has enjoyed to work under the artistic leadership of the famous Messerer family. Ballet Russe is made up of principal dancers, all trained in the Russian Classical style, some of whom were former lead and soloist dancers with the Kirov and Bolshoi Ballets. The dancers also have appeared at many other theatres all over the world, performing Classical and Modern Russian Ballet repertoires (Giselle, Les Sylphides, Swan Lake etc). All of them were studied at the Vaganova Ballet School and the Moscow Academy of Ballet. The company's main repertoire includes Paquita, Giselle, Les Sylphides and Gala (combined with different pieces of famous ballets: Nutcracker, Swan Lake, Bayadere, Sleeping Beauty, Tarantelle, Satanilla, many others). The company has decided to widen its repertoire, to include three new ballets, Cappelia, Valpurgiev's Night and the Nutcracker which is performed with pupils from a local dance school, namely "The Swansea Grand Theatre Dance School" Since making Swansea Grand Theatre its permanent home in August 1999, the company has dedicated themselves to taking its art form to communities and venues across Britain that would normally be excluded from professional tours. The company's current tour includes venues as diverse and far ranging as Muni Arts Center in Pontypridd, The Medina Theatre in Newport Isle of Wight and Dinefar Hall in Llandeilo. Being permanently based in Wales, a relatively small company Swansea's Ballet Russe are adaptable enough to perform at venues as small-scale as school halls, and theatres such as Swansea Grand which seats over 1000, something other Russia based touring companies would be unable to make cost effective. During its history Ballet Russe also has performed all over the UK: Croydon, Middlesborough, Swansea, Bristol, Falmouth, Wimbledon, Stafford, Lowestoft, Wellingborough and in many others. The company's community involvement goes further than simply performing to ordinarily excluded audiences. It regularly holds workshops with local artists, allowing them to study the human form in intricate detail. Ballet Russe is able to offer master classes with dance students in conjunction with many of our performances. It opens our rehearsals for four weeks a year to Japanese dance students, who travel to Wales to experience working with this prestigious company. Ballet Russe have just given their 3rd performance of The Nutcracker with pupils from The Grand Theatre School of Dancing - an experience which dancers and pupils alike enjoyed immensely. Since moving to Swansea Grand, Ballet Russe has enjoyed a high level of media attention. The company have been the subject of a BBC2 documentary, it have been profiled in a specially produced episode of the HTV Arts Program High Performance, their work has received coverage on both BBC and Newark news, the company gains regular coverage in The Western Mail and South Wales Evening Post, as well as having been reviewed by The Guardian and being featured in local papers whenever we tour. The company's English speaking dancers frequently participate in radio interviews to promote productions. All press releases conserving the particular ballet will carry a credit for a sponsoring company. What the press Say… "….
